As currently understood, Classic Maya kingship was a “divine or sacred kingship”, and a real consensus exists among Mayanists that this political regime, its system or ideology suffered a collapse by 750-950 AD (the Terminal Classic period). The knowledge that scholars have recently acquired about Maya divine kings provides clues to the degree of flexibility, or the vulnerability of the institutions that supported them. We propose to focus on identifying what variable processes and mechanisms inherent to the action of kings and courts, may have determined the ruptures, eventually also the transformations which affected Maya political institutions from the Late Classic to the Postclassic periods. The debate over data generated by all research projects is important, and will lead to renewed understandings, and to new research directions.
